Though I loved the famous rock operas, I felt that Pete Townshend and Roger Waters lacked solid dramatic storytelling skills but that Andrew Lloyd Webber didn’t rock hard enough. I set out to write my own and found a Welsh legend about a castle buried in sand. I recorded the demos for Pennard on cassette 4-track in Dallas, playing and singing everything myself. The recordings featured here are taken from six live performances in Seattle that were then mixed down in the studio. The idea was to pay the musicians and get a solid soundtrack that could be used in the next phase of development--a dance concert that we’d perform live, pay the dancers and get a good video. From there, re-writes and integrate the two into a full production.
