For my MFA thesis production at the University of Washington, I proposed to do a deconstruction of Lope de Vega’s classic Fuenteojejuna. The idea was to treat the text like it was in a literary cyclotron; fire other texts at it and put the explosion onstage. We incorporated Lope’s text, Aristotle’s Poetics, Augusto Boal, the Wooster Group, transcripts from the local McCarthyism (Canwell) hearings and whatever “Desert Shield” news the tv was showing live. We built a 3-camera tv studio, put half the cast in drag speaking spanish and the other half writing their own roles and attacked the theatre building from the street for a finale. Most of the faculty and staff opposed it until the reviews came out.
